Bamboo Inspired Decoration

Bamboo furniture creates a retro-chic look, as decorating in this style really came into vogue in the middle of the 20th century. Being so airy and quite striking, with beautiful detail and texture, bamboo furniture transcends the traditional boundaries of decorating in one singular style and can be incorporated into most aesthetics. This makes bamboo furniture the perfect compliment to any decor and especially our own Southern Style- it's classic and modern at the same time.

Modern bamboo furniture draws inspiration from a mix of styles: Palm Beach, Hollywood Regency, and Chinoiserie. For me, drawing inspiration from Chinoiserie adds a touch of elegance and exoticism. Chinoiserie has seen a growth of popularity of recent years, with designers harking back to the days of Dorothy Draper and mid-century madness. At Source Interior Designs, we often use Thibaut as a resource for wall coverings and one of my favorites is Imperial Garden:

We just used this in a different colorway for a client. The depth and detail is simply stunning in person. While you do not have to go full on Chinoiserie with a style like this, bamboo furniture can bring a bit of this style into your decor. We've recently brought into the store a mid-century faux bamboo (in painted metal) dining set. This really shows how chic and effortless incorporating this look into you decor could be.

From here, the possibilities are endless on how to customize this set to suit your particular taste. Faux bamboo sets the tone for the look and from here you can individualize this set to fit into any area, indoors or outdoors. This can be done with any bamboo (or faux bamboo, of course!) accent chair. Here are two featured in Southern Living that look fantastic in this room:

They have really mixed things up in this space and I absolutely adore it. When paneling can normally be considered very stuffy and formal, changing the color to this beautiful purple has really taken this space to the next level. This pair of chairs, featured here, shows the traditional color of bamboo. Normally brown, this is a material (faux or not) than can changed to suit your taste. It is often shown in white, but also a metallic or dark color could really add intensity and depth.

All of this discussion over seating and nothing else that looks beautiful in bamboo. Bamboo and faux bamboo are used in a variety of different ways, including mirrors, tables, case pieces, etc. All of these ideas can be incorporated into your design- just see what speaks to you. Personally, I'd take all of it, but just remember: a little bit of a good thing always goes a long way!

Until later,

Evie
