The Perfect Sofa: How to Decide and Where to Find It

All kidding aside, finding the perfect sofa is often an exhausting and difficult task. In living spaces, a sofa defines the space and all other elements fall into place. Decisions about whether to go bold or neutral, fabric or leather, patterned or solid, all of these choices lead up to (hopefully, finally) finding the perfect sofa.
Here at Source, we prefer a more eclectic look, finding items that make a statement and hold special value. I like to work this way around a design, finding pieces that you are absolutely in love with and then moving forward from there. For many people, a sofa is the deciding factor when beginning the decoration of a space. This is certainly a way to go, as long as you find something you're in love with, but going about it the other way is sometimes for fulfilling.
I wanted to begin with these two casually glamorous sofas. The first one from the fabulous manufacturer Caracole takes what would be a very simply linen sofa and brings it up a notch with the gold latticework on the back. It's the details like these that elevate a piece of furniture to the next level. I thought that this Chesterfield also has a unique twist on a very classic sofa. This one is updated with a beautiful silver/gray leather and finished with nail heads. The silk on the pillows makes this usually very masculine sofa much more feminine. This is a perfect example of a sofa that is usually featured in very traditional, masculine spaces and how it could work in a space that is much different.
I thought we would go from one end of the spectrum to the other. These two daybeds are perfect examples of what to use for seating in more formal spaces. Often I like to incorporate Louis XV-style chairs with more modern sofas, or vice-versa, but sometimes a more formal look is desired. We have a Swedish daybed like this on the floor of our showroom right now and what is fun with these pieces is that you can incorporate a variety of different fabrics and pillows to make these more livable.
The Louis XV daybed (like the one above) is really stunning. These often incorporate a polychrome finish that can vary wildly in color and give these pieces a beautiful patina. Often upholstered in various shades of linen, these can be a really awesome project to upholster is fun fabrics that can tie in with other spaces in your home or other pieces in a room.
Just remember that there are six things to remember when choosing a sofa: Shape, Size, Orientation, Upholstery and Style. We only covered a few of these today, but if you keep those things in mind when searching for a sofa, you're sure to find the right match!
